Planning a wedding can feel overwhelming, but having a well-thought-out wedding day timeline is the secret to a smooth, stress-free celebration. As a Oregon based destination wedding photographer, I’ve captured so many beautiful weddings, and I’ve seen firsthand how a well-structured timeline makes all the difference. Here’s how to create a schedule that keeps things running smoothly while allowing you to fully enjoy each moment!
Start with Your Ceremony Time
The ceremony time is the anchor for your entire wedding day schedule. Once you’ve set this, work backward and forward to fill in the details for getting ready, photos, and reception events.
Prioritize Moments that are important to both of you
Your day should be filled with moments that truly feel like you two. Every couple has different priorities for their wedding day. Maybe you’ve been dreaming of seeing each other for the first time walking down the Aisle, private vows or truly being apart of happy hour. Whatever matters most to you, build your timeline around those events to ensure they aren’t missed or rushed.
As a wedding photographer I can help you determine how much time is needed for different parts of the day. We’ll make sure to schedule them at the best time and giving enough time for you to truly be in the moment.
Include Extra downtime
Unexpected delays happen, and that’s completely normal! Adding extra time between major events helps keep things running smoothly. Plan for 10-15 minute so there’s no stress if something takes longer than expected. I will also always plan for 30 minutes extra prior to your ceremony just to give you all a time to breathe, relax, and truly soak in the moment.
Getting Ready Tips
Allow More Time Than You Think The morning of your wedding should be relaxed and enjoyable.
- Detail: 30 minutes for your photographer to capture the dress, rings, invitations etc
- 15-20 minutes for final touch-ups photo for both parties
- Getting Dressed: 30-45 minutes. First looks with family and or wedding party.
- 10-15 minutes per – First look with family or wedding party

First Look and Portraits
First Look or Traditional Aisle Reveal? If you’re planning a first look, schedule it 1.5 to 2 hours before the ceremony.
This allows time for:
Private vows & Couple portraits
Wedding party photos
Some family photos (if desired)
If you prefer a traditional aisle reveal, we can plan some photos separately but you’ll need to schedule more portrait time after the ceremony for full wedding party, family and couple photos.

First touch and Private Vows
If you’ve always dreamed of the aisle reveal, I still highly recommend doing a first touch and taking a moment just for the two of you. The day will go by fast, and having this private moment allows you to spend more time together and maybe help calm any nerves

Family & Group Photos: Efficiency is KeyPlan for 20 – 30 minutes (about 2-3 minutes per group) for family portraits. Have a pre-planned list and someone to helps is a must!
Ceremony and Reception Flow
If your ceremony location and reception venue are different, don’t forget to factor in travel time. After the ceremony, plan a smooth transition into happy hour so guests stay entertained if time is needed for portraits or time for you to join all of them!
Once the reception begins, keep things moving by scheduling key moments like:
- First dances and family dances
- Speeches
- Cake cutting
- Dance floor- I recommend doing a group dance with everyone to get the party started!
Plan for Golden Hour in Your Timeline– Must-Have Magic
If possible, sneak away for 15-20 minutes of sunset photos. One of the best ways to keep your stress-free wedding day timeline on track is by scheduling golden hour portraits—just before sunset. This is when the light is soft and flattering, creating those romantic photos you love.

Enjoy each Moment
At the end of the day, sticking to a stress-free wedding day timeline allows you to focus on celebrating love without unnecessary stress. While planning is essential, don’t get so caught up in the schedule that you forget to enjoy it! Build in moments to pause, breathe, and take it all in.
That’s one of the reasons I love documentary-style photography—I can capture genuine, candid moments while you focus on the experience.
Plan Your Exit (Or Fake One!)If you want sparkler or grand exit photos but don’t want to party until midnight, consider a staged exit earlier in the night.
Final ThoughtsA stress-free timeline makes all the difference in ensuring a smooth, joyful wedding day. Work with your planner, photographer, and vendors to fine-tune the details, and remember—this is your day to enjoy every moment!
